ARTERIOsclerosis or ATHEROsclerosis? Why the Difference Matters

Many people use the terms arteriosclerosis and atherosclerosis interchangeably. While they are closely related, they do not mean the same thing. Understanding the difference can help you better understand how cardiovascular disease develops—and, more importantly, how to support long-term vascular health.

What Is Arteriosclerosis?

The word arteriosclerosis literally means hardening of the arteries. As we age, arteries gradually lose some of their natural elasticity. Their walls become stiffer, making it more difficult for blood to flow efficiently. This increased stiffness can contribute to higher blood pressure and place additional strain on the heart. In other words, arteriosclerosis primarily describes changes in the structure and flexibility of the artery wall.

What Is Atherosclerosis?

Atherosclerosis is a specific type of arteriosclerosis. It occurs when cholesterol, fats, inflammatory cells, calcium, and connective tissue accumulate within the artery wall, forming plaques. Over time, these plaques can narrow the arteries and reduce blood flow. The greatest danger arises when a plaque becomes unstable and ruptures. A blood clot can form within minutes, blocking blood flow completely and causing a heart attack or stroke.

Is Cholesterol Really the Problem?

For decades, cholesterol was considered the primary cause of atherosclerosis. Today, science shows that the picture is far more complex. Cholesterol is essential for life. Every cell in the body depends on it to build cell membranes, produce hormones, synthesize vitamin D, and support many other vital biological functions. The problem begins when the artery wall becomes damaged. Chronic inflammation, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes, and metabolic dysfunction can all injure the inner lining of the arteries. Under these conditions, cholesterol becomes part of a much larger biological process rather than the sole cause of plaque formation.

The Endothelium: Your Arteries’ First Line of Defense

The inside of every artery is covered by a thin layer of specialized cells called the endothelium. Although only one cell thick, this layer regulates blood flow, helps prevent unwanted clotting, controls inflammation, and keeps blood vessels functioning normally. When the endothelium becomes damaged, the risk of developing atherosclerosis increases significantly. Protecting the endothelium is one of the most important steps in maintaining healthy arteries.
