The blood test results arrive, and your attention goes straight to cholesterol. You recognize the words LDL and HDL, even if their meaning is not entirely clear. Then you notice another result marked “high”: triglycerides. You may feel perfectly well, which makes the number harder to interpret. Is this another name for cholesterol, a sign of diabetes, or something connected to what you ate?

High triglycerides mean that the concentration of a particular type of fat in your blood is above the recommended range. Persistently elevated levels can increase cardiovascular risk, and very high levels can also endanger the pancreas. What are triglycerides?

What counts as a high triglyceride level?
For adults, these are commonly used categories for a fasting triglyceride result:

Why might triglycerides be elevated?
Several influences may overlap. Regularly consuming more energy than you need, particularly with a high intake of added sugars, can contribute. Alcohol, excess weight, certain medicines, inherited conditions, an underactive thyroid, poorly controlled diabetes, and kidney or liver disease are other possibilities. This is why blaming a single food can be misleading. It is more useful to discuss your usual eating and drinking habits, medications, family history, and other test results with your clinician. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because you suspect it is contributing; ask whether a review is appropriate.
Does it mean you have insulin resistance or diabetes?
Elevated triglycerides can occur alongside insulin resistance, a condition in which cells respond less effectively to insulin. People with insulin resistance or prediabetes may also have changes in cholesterol, blood pressure, or liver health. That makes triglycerides a reason to consider the wider metabolic picture, but they do not establish a diagnosis of diabetes or insulin resistance by themselves.
Your clinician may consider blood glucose or an A1C test, together with your history and other risk factors. A1C reflects average blood glucose over roughly three months; a triglyceride result measures something different. How do triglycerides relate to heart health?

What changes can help lower triglycerides?
For many people, useful changes begin with ordinary meals and routines. Reducing sugary drinks and added sugars, choosing whole grains more often than refined starches, and replacing some saturated fat with unsaturated sources are common recommendations. Vegetables, beans, lentils, fish, and appropriately sized portions can help form a practical eating pattern. Alcohol deserves a separate discussion because it can raise triglycerides, sometimes substantially in susceptible people.
Regular activity also helps. Walking, cycling, swimming, or another activity you can maintain is a sensible starting point, adapted to your health and current ability.
